Student Disability Commission

2025-2026 Events

This year, the Student Disability Commission hosted a series of community hangouts designed to bring disabled students together outside of meetings and advocacy work. These events provided opportunities for students to connect, build friendships, and find community in a welcoming and accessible space. From social gatherings to fun activities, each event helped strengthen connections within the disability community on campus.

Community Hangouts

Dog Toy Making

One of our first community hangouts focused on making dog toys from old SDC t-shirts. It was a fun way to repurpose materials, get creative, and spend time together outside of meetings.

Air-Dry Clay Keychains

During this community hangout, students created colorful air-dry clay keychains. The activity encouraged creativity while providing a fun space to connect with one another.

Pearl Keychains

Students designed colorful pearl keychains, turning simple beads into unique and personalized creations.

Italian Soda Hangout

Over homemade Italian sodas, students gathered to relax, chat, and connect with one another during this last SDC Hangout.

Self-Defense Workshop

In collaboration with the Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Activists (SARVA), SDC hosted a self-defense workshop designed to empower disabled students and build confidence in their personal safety. Led by a trained instructor, the workshop provided practical strategies and techniques that students could adapt to their own needs and abilities. The event recognized that disabled individuals may face unique safety challenges and aimed to demonstrate that everyone deserves access to tools for self-protection.

Through hands-on learning, discussion, and community building, students left with greater confidence, increased awareness, and a stronger sense of security. Snacks were provided, creating a welcoming space for participants to connect with one another while learning valuable skills.
